Fondant Cake

Fondant cake is not really that difficult to make. It only takes patient, interest and smile to make it happen. At easyfrosting, we teach our students individually 'hands on' on how to create such beautiful cake one step at a time. We welcome all kinds of ideas, designs and creativity. There's always a way to design and construct even the most 'impossible like' design.

Fondant is a clay-like sugar base material that is use for cake covering and decorating. It can be colored, flavored and mold into various shapes. Here's an example of a fondant cake making.

1. After 'crumb coating' a cake. Fondant can be colored with a food coloring gel with your preferred color. Knead through till the color is even. Make sure the quantity of each colored fondant is sufficient to cover the whole cake. It's better to have extra, rather than insufficient amount as coloring the fondant each mix might give you different color shades.

2. Dust some icing sugar on your rubber mat. Roll out your colored fondant to approx. 5mm thick. Try maintaining the shape to be round while rolling it out. Roll up the fondant by using a rolling pin and carefully unroll the fondant slowly over the cake. Trim off the extra fondant on the side of the cake using a knife or a pizza cutter.

3. Use fondant smoother to smooth out the fondant, remove any air bubbles or cracks(if any).  Dust off excessive icing sugar with a brush or sponge. This will give the cake a satin smooth surface.

4. Decorate you cake with sugar paste flowers or fondant cut outs as you wish. You can either use fondant for the border or you may use royal icing to pipe shells or beads.
